Adrenal insufficiency – Does it exist?

Adrenal insufficiency has some symptoms. But what are they exactly? You can often recognize them by fatigue, exhaustion and sleep problems. There is also another term for adrenal weakness – adrenal exhaustion. Orthodox medicine does not recognize this condition. In this article I would like to take a closer look at this topic.

Many physicians or doctors do not know this disease. The situation is completely different for alternative practitioners or doctors who continue their education. More and more people know the problem that they are more and more stressed, sleep worse and are quickly tired and exhausted. Some even go on diets and cannot lose weight. Alternative practitioners or naturopathic doctors recognize adrenal weakness here. But why is this condition not recognized by conventional medicine? Quite simply, they dismiss it as if it were a fad disease like Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Difference between adrenal insufficiency and adrenal insufficiency

There are, of course, differences between adrenal insufficiency and adrenal insufficiency. In a short text I would like to show which tasks an adrenal gland has.

These tasks have the adrenal glands

The mentioned adrenal glands are small glands that produce hormones. Every person has two adrenal glands. They produce 40 different hormones. They consist of the adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla.

Adrenal medulla

Adrenaline and noradrenaline are produced in this part. These are both stress hormones.

Adrenal cortex

The stress hormone cortisol is produced here, as well as aldosterone (which regulates blood pressure) and androgens (for example, testosterone and DHEA). It is important to know that this part does not act independently, it gets word from the brain when and how many hormones to produce.

For this we need cortisols

In case of adrenal insufficiency, the adrenal cortex is particularly affected. Then too little cortisol is produced. Cortisol, however, has a certain power on our metabolism. For example, it enables us to cope better with stress. If we are under stress, there is a lot of cortisol in our blood, which increases blood pressure and causes the liver to produce more sugar. This breaks down fat and protein, providing more energy for the body. It also inhibits inflammatory processes in the body and suppresses the immune system.

Adrenal over- and underfunction

In conventional medicine, hardly anyone knows these terms. However, we know these terms from the thyroid gland. Of course, there are also both here. In case of an overfunction of the adrenal cortex we speak of Cushing’s disease. In the case of hypofunction, we speak of Addison’s disease or adrenal insufficiency.

What is Cushing’s disease?

In Cushing’s disease, the adrenal cortex produces too much cortisol. The symptoms are seen in people who have been prescribed cortisol by their doctor. They can be the following:

-Full moon face

-neck and abdomen show fat accumulation and besides that arms and legs are thin

-thin skin

-suffering diabetes or acne

What is Addison’s disease (adrenal insufficiency)?

Here it is the other way around. The affected person produces far too little cortisol. The adrenal cortex cannot make enough cortisol. This can have many reasons, for example tumors, autoimmune processes that destroy cells.

Symptoms of adrenal insufficiency

The following symptoms occur in adrenal insufficiency:

-No menstrual periods in women

-joint and muscle pain

-Abdominal pain

-Nausea

-Lack of appetite

-Lower blood pressure

-weight loss

-Fatigue

However, individuals may not show any discomfort or symptoms in normal life. Many are more likely to show drops in blood pressure or circulatory problems in high stress situations.

Symptoms of adrenal insufficiency

Rarely do people develop adrenal insufficiency, as opposed to adrenal insufficiency. The last occurs very often, many usually often diagnose themselves with this. The symptoms show why this is so:

Often people with adrenal insufficiency have too much stress. Normally, the hormonal balance should settle down again. The cortisol level, which is too high, should decrease and the person should then be able to rest. However, if life is coupled with constant stress, the cortisol level will always remain high. At some point, the adrenal gland is extremely exhausted and can no longer maintain the cortisol level. Thus, continuous stress leads to a cortisol deficiency. To this end, I would like to mention a few reasons why such adrenal insufficiency could still occur:

-Various foods that are not tolerated

-Too much sports or work

-Emotional stress
