Micro-Needling and Mesotherapy are the absolute all-rounders when it comes to gentle anti-aging treatments. No wonder – the results are amazing and the risk is low. Micro -needling is not only suitable for skin rejuvenation and anti-aging treatments of face and décolleté. The procedure is even successfully used for stretch marks, hyperpigmentation and rosacea.

There are needle rollers for home use, many cosmetic studios offer this treatment and you can also have this application performed by a doctor. In terms of price, the various options differ quite considerably. But what is the difference between cosmetic and medical micro-needling?

Micro-injuries provide for the formation of collagen and hyaluronic acid

In MicroNeedling, the skin is treated with a dermaroller or a micro-needling pen, on which there are many small needles. These prick the epidermis and cause micro-injuries – this sounds much more painful than it is. The skin responds by producing more collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. Collagen is responsible for a firm skin structure, elastin provides elasticity and hyaluronic acid binds moisture. Along the way, a wide variety of active ingredients can be incorporated into the skin.

There are great differences in MicroNeedling

However, there are great differences between the various rollers and the treatment at home, in a cosmetic studio and with a trained physician. For the treatment in the studio and at home, the penetration depth of the needles is a maximum of 0.25mm. Due to the rollers usually used, the needles do not hit the skin perpendicularly, so that occasionally cracks, scarring and inflammation can occur.

The doctor works with a micro-needling pen, which is equipped with a sterile needle pad. This allows the needles to strike the skin perpendicularly, minimizing the risk of injury. In addition, the doctor may work with needles that penetrate up to two millimeters deep into the skin. The deeper the needles penetrate, the stronger the stimulus set and the skin produces more collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid and the rejuvenating effect on the skin’s appearance is greater.

The individual needles are extremely thin, so most people do not find the procedure painful. For very sensitive people or a treatment with a large penetration depth, the skin can be treated with an anesthetic gel beforehand.

Anti-aging serums and vital substances potentiate the treatment success

During the treatment with the needles, numerous active substances can be simultaneously introduced into the skin through the microchannels that are created. There are serums containing stem cells, ampoules with specific anti-aging active ingredients, vital substances and

vitamins. Your expert will first analyze your skin and discuss with you which active ingredient is best suited for your skin. Choosing the right serum is an art in itself and can amplify the effect of the treatment many times over.

“MicroNeedling is really an all-rounder in my practice and sets completely new standards. I use it alone or in combination with other gentle procedures, such as JetPeel™, Botox or fillers” – says our expert for gentle beauty procedures Dr. Bas Orth, with whom we have already conducted an interview on gentle aesthetic medicine.

With patience to fewer wrinkles and younger skin appearance

Compared to treatment with the laser – which also stimulates the formation of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, there is no risk of burns or discoloration of the skin, so you do not have to expect downtime. Only directly after the treatment the skin is slightly reddened. In individual cases, slight swelling may occur, but this quickly subsides.

The only disadvantage of this gentle procedure is that you have to be patient until the effects become visible. Unlike plumping, lifting or treatment with Botox, this procedure relies on the rejuvenation of the skin itself through the body’s own production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid – which takes a while.

For optimal success, you should plan on three to four sessions, each four to six weeks apart. You can enjoy the final result after three to six months. The results will remain visible for about two years. For a permanently younger and better skin appearance, a refresher treatment with three sessions takes place annually.

A single session of micro-needling with high-quality stem cell serum and appropriate preparation of the skin (e.g. JetPeel™) costs around EUR 350 to 500 in the doctor’s office.

Dr. Bas Orth is a specialist in ear, nose and throat medicine and a specialist in aesthetic medicine. In his institute he focuses on gentle aesthetic procedures.
