In this blog post, you’ll learn what we’d like to see in healthcare collaboration and how we came to be a #mentoring tandem publishing a joint journal article on healthcare leadership. But let’s start from the beginning…
Since March 2021, we, mentee Anna (master student in the study program “Management in Healthcare”) and mentor Felix (physician and executive at Klinikum Darmstadt) form a #mentoring tandem.
After the kick-off event and getting to know each other (virtually) for the first time, we quickly decided that we wanted to write a professional article together on a current topic. And indeed, we quickly found topics that excited both of us. This included the current buzzwords New Work and Purpose. While Anna first discovered her enthusiasm for value- and purpose-oriented leadership during a seminar at university, Felix had already been working on the topic of purpose economy for several years. His idea of founding a responsibility-owned MVZ quickly gave rise to the Purpose:Health e.V. association, which advocates for purpose-oriented and sustainable change in the healthcare sector.
In the weeks that followed, we asked ourselves the following questions: What role does Purpose play in healthcare and what actually constitutes a value-oriented understanding of leadership?
Purpose – what does it mean?
The English term Purpose stands for the sense and purpose of a work or of an entire organization. Purpose encompasses more than just marketing. The question of “why” is being asked more and more frequently across the generations. For employees in the healthcare sector, too, the sense of purpose in their own work is of great importance and makes a decisive contribution to motivation and satisfaction. But especially in the healthcare sector, there is a lot of catching up to do in terms of patient and employee orientation.
How can the change towards more value orientation be shaped?
We have good news! Purpose orientation begins in daily collaboration. Away from silo thinking, towards more holism and cooperative collaboration, in which appreciative and transparent communication is exemplified on a daily basis.
How did the article come about?
Using the ping-pong principle, we sent the text to each other again and again and adapted it. By the end of May, we had finished the manuscript. If you would like to read more about Purpose in healthcare and value-based leadership, you will find our article in the current issue (06/2021) of Health&Care Management (HCM) on pages 36-37, because that is where our manuscript was actually published. And of course we appreciate your feedback!
